Stereolithography Project Process

When I heard about an opportunity to use a 3-D printer I really wanted to do a project on it. I had a one week time restriction to get a model in. I decided to make a custom lego figure of "Uncle Scrooge". I was stressed during this week, but I managed to get the model in. The first day I had looked for the dimensions of a lego figure, but to no avail. I then came across LEO CAD. This was a CAD program with all of lego's bricks and parts in scale dimensions. The rest of the week I worked on the model. As I mentioned, I got it in on time, but at some point the printer got jammed before my project could print. I was disappointed, but I just kept working on my previous project. The next week I worked on the proposal, and when everyone was done we got into groups and pitched our ideas. I liked this because it was not just the teacher giving tips, it was also other students. After that process I started working on researching. I managed to find most of the research I was looking for. The thing I couldn't find was how 3-D printers have evolved. I even found a video where CNN interviews the inventor.  The last week of my project I planned the order I will present what I did. I also practiced my "Blender" tutorial.

PDD Interchangable Art Final Reflection

I think the thing I learned the most about  in this project is how to create a product that has never been made before. This includes how many challenges there are while creating the product. There were many times during this project where I felt overwhelmed by the amount of work to do, but I knew I had to keep working in order to relieve the stress. It was also difficult when searching for help because it was very difficult to explain the project to others. Thankfully my sister understood the idea we had, so we where able to ask her. In my opinion the biggest challenge we had was cutting the wood. It was difficult because I first had to draw out plans, which I didn't know, and then organizing the time to actually cut it. If I could change anything about this project I wouldn't change anything. I find if I changed anything I wouldn't get the same learning as I did doing the project the way I did now. I think I did well throughout the project. While pre-planning everything was well planned and mostly organized, and I feel I planned out before each step quite well. While working on this project I think that I worked hard. At the beginning I honestly didn't work as hard as I could have, but as soon as I realized I had to work harder I did, and in the end we were able to finish everything. My weekly reflections were, for the most part, accurate and I was always honest in my posts. While explaining our project during the peer-review we were able to accurately explain what we were doing, our progress so far and were able to get good feedback about what to work on/change after after the peer-review.  During the presentation I feel we were able to explain our project, and show some of our progress. The biggest part of the presentation was the play we made. I think we were able to achieve our objective of creating the new product, and were able to explain it and show how it works. I think this was a success because people did not have questions about the concept, or how it worked after the presentation, but instead they asked about other uses for it. I also think we talked clearly throughout the presentation. I would say we achieved our goals quite well, as we were able to do everything we hoped to do, as I explained earlier. The one thing I think we could have done better is making the slides easier to slide into the slots. I believe this was difficult for us as we only finished the frame a few days before the presentation, so we didn't have much time to fix that. I hope to be able to finish my next project with more time before the presentation to avoid another situation like what happened.

PDD Interchangable Art Presentation

Project 1 Reflections Week 5-7

This is going to be short, as it was a while back, but I was busy...

I was unable to work on the project during week 5 as I was working on my next project (more info coming soon). The next week I worked on the characters and the painting. We also had to start preparing for our presentation the following Friday. We also had our peer-review this week, so we prepared a questionnaire. We got helpful feedback, but our last question "What would you like to see using this concept" would have been too much of a handful for the time we had so we couldn't use any of those responses. Week 7 was stressful as there was a lot to get done in a short amount of time. Hyun and I worked on the project every day, cutting out trees, painting, gluing and recording. I also built the frame which we got help cutting out during Week 6. On Friday we presented, and I think it went pretty well. I will have a video of that on the blog in the next day or two.
